Most policyholders know about cancellation, but far fewer understand the heavier hammer: policy voidance.
While cancellation ends your cover from a chosen date going forward, voidance wipes the slate clean from the very start, treating your policy as if it never existed. It’s one of the most serious outcomes under your Pineapple policy, and it usually stems from dishonesty or missing critical information.
What Does "Policy Voidance" Mean?
When your policy is voided, Pineapple doesn’t just stop covering you; it’s as though you never had valid cover at all. Every benefit, every promise, every claim falls away retroactively, back to your Cover Start Date.
Where cancellation is like closing a book, voidance is like the book never being written.
Financial Consequences of Voidance
If your policy is voided, the financial impact is immediate and strict:
Premium Refunds (with Deductions)
Pineapple refunds premiums you’ve already paid, but deducts both the cost of the cover you enjoyed during the void period and a R450 premium refund administration fee.
Claim Rejection and Recovery
Any pending claims will be rejected.
If Pineapple has already paid out on claims under the voided policy, they have the right to recover those amounts from you.
How Is Voidance Different From Cancellation?
Cancellation: Your cover ends on a chosen date, but anything before that date remains valid.
Voidance: Your cover is erased from day one. No valid policy ever existed in the insurer’s eyes.
This distinction is critical; voidance isn’t about ending cover going forward, it’s about rewriting history.
How to Prevent Policy Voidance
Avoiding voidance boils down to one principle: absolute honesty and full disclosure.
Double-check every piece of information when applying.
Disclose all past claims, previous policy cancellations, and relevant changes.
If in doubt about whether something counts as “material information,” tell Pineapple anyway.
Being upfront may adjust your premium but it also guarantees your policy stands when you need it most.
Policy voidance is the insurance world’s red card: it removes your cover entirely and can undo even past claims. By staying transparent, accurate, and proactive with your information, you can keep your Pineapple policy valid and avoid this outcome entirely.
