Understanding Claiming Under More Than One Policy Section: Avoiding Double Dipping

Avoiding Double Dipping

Insurance isn’t a “buy-one-get-one-free” deal. What we mean is, if the same loss touches more than one section of your Pineapple policy, you don’t get two payouts. This rule is called “Claiming Under More Than One Policy Section” — and knowing it upfront will save you frustration later.

The Principle: One Loss, One Payout

Pineapple spells it out clearly:

“We do not compensate the Policyholder under more than one Section of this Policy for any Covered Event, loss, or damage that arises from the same event, or for the same item.”

Why? Because insurance works on the principle of indemnity: it’s about putting you back where you were financially before the loss, not boosting you into a better spot.

How It Plays Out in Real Life

Imagine this:

  • You’ve got Household Contents cover for everything in your home.

  • You’ve also got All-Risk cover for your laptop because you travel with it.

One night, your house gets broken into and the laptop is stolen. Technically, you could argue the loss falls under both sections. But you can’t claim under both. Pineapple will only pay once under the most relevant section.

This keeps things fair, simple, and prevents messy “double-dip” claims.

Why the Rule Exists

  • No profit from loss: It makes sure you’re compensated for the actual value of what you lost, not rewarded for being insured twice.

  • Simpler claims: No internal tug-of-war about which section should cover you.

  • Fairness for all: The system stays balanced, which keeps premiums in check across the Pineapple community.

What To Do if Your Loss Could Fit Two Sections

  • Assess the loss: Which section is more relevant? For a stolen laptop at home, Contents might make sense. If it’s stolen while you’re travelling, All-Risk is the way to go.

  • Ask Pineapple: Not sure? Contact us through the Pineapple app (which you can download here) or website (pineapple.co.za) we’ll guide you.

  • Claim once, claim right: Pick the section that applies, and stick to it.

Think of your policy as a toolkit: each section covers different scenarios, but you don’t get to use two spanners for the same bolt. Choosing the correct section ensures your claim is smooth, fair, and paid without complications.
