Planning a renovation? 🛠 New kitchen, bigger lounge, open-plan dream? Before you bring in the builders, here’s something you should know: major structural alterations can affect your Household Contents insurance. If you don’t tell Pineapple, you could end up without cover when you need it most.

The Notification Rule

Your policy is clear:

“The Policyholder must tell us if he/she intends to do structural building alterations to the Private Residence.”

Translation: if you’re about to break down walls, extend the house, or tinker with the structure, Pineapple needs to know before the work starts.

Why Alterations Affect Your Cover

Renovations change the risk profile of your home — both while the builders are in and sometimes after. Here’s why:

  • Higher risk of damage → Falling debris, accidental knocks, water leaks, dust everywhere.

  • Security gaps → Scaffolding, wide-open doors, or temporary access points = easier entry for theft.

  • Building integrity → Major changes can affect how your home handles storms, fires, or other perils.

In short: more risk = Pineapple needs to reassess your cover.

What Happens If You Don’t Tell Us

If you skip the notification, your claim could be rejected. That means if damage happens during or because of undisclosed renovations, Pineapple may not compensate you. Not worth the gamble.

What To Do Before You Start Building

  1. Notify Pineapple → Use the app or website to let us know what you’re planning and how long it’ll take.

  2. Risk Assessment → We’ll review and may:

    • Adjust terms (e.g., higher excess or temporary exclusions).

    • Increase premiums to match the extra risk.

    • Suggest specialised “Contract Works” or “Renovation” insurance to protect both old and new structures.

  3. Agree & Comply → Make sure you’re clear on the updated terms before work begins.

Structural vs. Cosmetic

  • Structural Alterations → Big jobs: changing load-bearing walls, extending the house, roof or foundation work.

  • Cosmetic Changes → Smaller updates: painting, light fittings, or a new kitchen splashback.

Not sure which category your project falls into? Play it safe — ask Pineapple.

Renovations can give your home a glow-up, but they also increase risk. By letting Pineapple know upfront, you keep your Household Contents properly protected and avoid claim rejections down the line. Simple admin now = peace of mind later.
