Understanding Householders' Liability: Protecting You from Third-Party Claims

Your Household Contents insurance doesn’t just cover your stuff. It also protects you financially if something happens to someone else on your property — and you’re found legally responsible. That’s where Householders' Liability Cover comes in.

What is Householders' Liability?

Householders' Liability is your financial safety net if a “Third Party” (anyone other than you, your spouse, family who live with you, or your employees at work) suffers harm at your home and you’re found legally responsible.

In plain English: if someone gets hurt or their property is damaged at your place — and it’s on you — this cover helps pay for it.

What’s Covered

Pineapple compensates you if you’re held liable for:

  • Accidental death of another person.

  • Accidental bodily injury to another person.

  • Accidental loss of or damage to someone else’s property.

These must happen during your cover period and at your Private Residence (including outbuildings).

How Compensation Works

If Pineapple agrees to compensate under this cover, it can include:

  • The actual damages you’re legally responsible for.

  • Legal costs incurred by the other party that you’re liable for.

  • Costs you rack up (with Pineapple’s approval) to defend or settle the claim.

The Limit

Your Household Liability Cover is capped at R5,000,000 per incident (or series of incidents from one event). That’s serious protection for what could otherwise be sky-high legal bills.

Example Scenario

Imagine this: a guest visits your home, trips on a loose step you didn’t know about, and ends up with a broken leg and a mountain of medical bills. If they sue you, your Householders' Liability cover steps in — paying legal costs and damages (up to your limit).

What’s Not Covered

As with all insurance, there are exclusions. You’re not covered for:

  • Claims by insured persons - You, your family living with you, or your employees on duty.

  • Damage to your own property - Cover is for third parties, not your own belongings.

  • Non-residence liability - Claims linked to your business, job, or properties you own/rent other than the insured residence.

  • Aircraft, vehicles, or watercraft - No cover for accidents linked to these.

  • Support of property - Liability from interfering with the support of land, buildings, or property.

Householders' Liability extends your cover beyond your belongings — protecting you from potentially massive legal costs if someone gets hurt or suffers damage at your home. By understanding both what’s included and what’s excluded, you’ll know exactly where you stand if the unexpected happens.
