When it comes to Household Contents insurance, security isn’t just “nice to have” — it’s a condition of your cover. Pineapple links your theft cover directly to specific security measures at your home. If those measures aren’t in place (or working), your claim could be rejected.
General Security Requirements for Theft Cover
For Residential Homes (e.g. standalone houses):
You need one of the following:
Option 1: Security bars on all opening windows and security gates on all external doors. These must be locked whenever the property is unattended.
Option 2: An alarm system linked to a 24-hour armed response service.
For Other Residential Types (e.g. estates, townhouses, complexes, flats):
You need one of the following:
Option 1: Manned security at entry points and perimeter security (like electric fencing or access control).
Option 2: An alarm system linked to a 24-hour armed response service.
The "Forced Entry" Rule
For theft or attempted theft claims, there must be visible signs of forced entry or exit — broken locks, smashed windows, forced doors. Without clear evidence of a break-in, theft claims won’t be paid.
Example: If items are stolen from your house but there’s no sign of forced entry, that claim could be rejected.
Extra Conditions for Alarm Systems & Perimeter Security
If your Policy Schedule says you have these, certain rules apply:
Alarm Systems
Must be installed, functional, and linked to 24-hour armed response.
Your service contract with the security company must be up to date.
If you leave home, the alarm must be armed for the entire property — and none of the detectors can be blocked or bypassed.
Perimeter Security
Must always be functional and armed.
Must include manned security at all entry/exit points.
Jewellery & Watches: Extra Security Rules
For items valued at R5,000 or more per item:
When not worn, they must be kept in a locked wall- or floor-mounted safe.
Safe keys must be kept in a different locked compartment.
If you don’t follow this rule, Pineapple will not pay for theft or attempted theft involving these items.
The Consequence of Non-Compliance
Pineapple puts it plainly:
“If at the time of the claim incident the above minimum-security requirement was not met, then no cover will be given for theft or attempted theft claims which occur at the Private Residence.”
Translation: no security, no payout.
Think of these requirements as your insurance entry ticket. By keeping your security measures in place and in working order, you keep your cover valid and your belongings protected. Regular checks on locks, alarms, and safes go a long way in making sure you’re not caught off guard when it matters most.
