What You Need to Know
So, you’re thinking about cancelling your Household Contents insurance (say it ain’t so)? Pineapple has kept the process as straightforward as possible. That said, there are a few key details to know about timelines, refunds, and what happens to your cover when you cancel.
How to Cancel
You can cancel your policy anytime through:
The Pineapple App (download it here: https://bit.ly/getPineapple) allows you to manage your policy, including cancellations, with just a few taps.
The Pineapple Website (www.pineapple.co.za) allows you to use the live chat function to request cancellation.
Send a request to Pineapple’s Email (fresh@pineapple.co.za), which goes to one of our helpful and qualified agents.
"When you request to cancel through our channels, you will be provided with a contact number which you can call for assistance. If you choose not to call, one of our agents will reach out to assist within 24 to 48 hours of receiving the request."
When Cancellation Takes Effect
Your policy cancellation takes effect at midnight on the day you decide to cancel. That means you’ll no longer have insurance coverage from that point forward.
Refunds and Costs
Refund rules depend on timing:
Premium already collected. If you cancel after your debit has run, no refund applies (since you were covered for that period).
Premium submitted but not collected. If we’ve already sent your premium for collection, it can be refunded, but a R450 administration fee will be deducted.
Cooling-off period (first 14 days). If you cancel within 14 days of starting or adding new cover (and haven’t claimed), you’ll get your premium back, less the cost of cover already enjoyed.
After a claim. No refunds apply if you’ve already claimed.
Total loss. If a covered event results in a total loss during the month, the premium for the rest of that month isn’t refunded.
Example: If your debit order is on the 25th, but you cancel on the 15th, your cover ends at midnight on the 15th. Since the current premium was already collected, no refund applies.
Things to Consider Before Cancelling
Make sure you’ve lined up new insurance to avoid gaps in protection.
Sometimes, making updates and adjustments to your cover is more practical than cancelling outright.
Debits already submitted may still go through, even after cancellation.
TIP: By understanding these points, you can manage your cancellation smoothly without experiencing unexpected costs or gaps in cover.
