Understanding Your Policy's Geographical Scope: Where Your Cover Applies

Policy Territorial Limit

Your Pineapple insurance policy protects you at home and, in some cases, far beyond your front door. But every policy has boundaries, and knowing where your cover applies is crucial to avoiding unpleasant surprises, especially when you’re travelling.

General Policy Applicability

For a pineapple motor policy, your cover stretches beyond South Africa to include:

  • Botswana

  • Lesotho

  • Mozambique

  • Malawi

  • Namibia

  • Eswatini

  • Zimbabwe.

This means if you’re road-tripping through Southern Africa, your vehicle remains protected, provided you follow the correct steps before crossing the border.

General & Specified Items (All-Risk) Cover

  • Worldwide Protection: If you’ve insured portable valuables (like a laptop, cellphone, or jewellery), they’re covered globally.

    • Example: If your laptop is stolen from your Airbnb in London, it’s covered.

    • Example: If you lose your watch while hiking in Cape Town, it’s also covered.

This section ensures your everyday essentials are protected, whether you’re around the corner or overseas.

Motor Vehicle Cover

Private Use Vehicles are covered:

  • in SA, Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Malawi, Namibia, Eswatini, and Zimbabwe.

  • Cover also applies while your car is being transported by water between ports in these countries.

  • Border Cover Letter: You must request this letter from Pineapple before crossing any of these borders. It’s valid for 31 days and proves your car is covered while outside SA.

Important: Third Party Liability (damage or injury to others) is only covered inside South Africa. Once you cross into Botswana, Zimbabwe, or elsewhere, you’ll need to buy separate liability cover at the border post.

Business Use Vehicles

  • Coverage is strictly limited to within South Africa. If you’re delivering stock to Namibia in a vehicle insured for “Business Use,” you won’t have cover outside SA.

Geographical Exclusions

It's important to refer to the specific countries that are explicitly excluded in each Policy Section. Your Pineapple policy also won’t cover claims connected to:

  • Any event or claim that would result in exposure to sanctions, prohibitions, or restrictions under United Nations regulations or the trade/economic sanctions of the European Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.

By understanding these geographical nuances, you can plan your travel and use of insured items with confidence, ensuring your Pineapple policy provides the necessary protection wherever you go.
